What does Rural Communities Design Initiative [RCDI] do?
The RCDI is a program that provides community based outreach learning to students and service to rural communities in Washington and Idaho. Each year faculty leading the RCDI select from a series of community based projects to provide design and planning ideas to rural community leaders and citizens. This program expands the land grant mission of WSU. Students who participate in this program gain experience working with communities and government leaders in understanding the unique issues of rural communities. The studio organizes community “Charettes” where citizen ideas are revealed from which students then develop proposals. Often student proposals form the basis for communities to seek grant funding for implementation of projects.
